About The SmartBar Foundation
You deserve the full picture.
“The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.” — Thomas Edison
Who We Are
The SmartBar Foundation is a nonprofit built on a simple but powerful idea: you deserve the full picture.
Not the oversimplified version. Not the version that skips the questions worth asking. The full, research-informed picture of what your body needs to thrive — and what may be quietly working against it.
We are not doctors. We are not a pharmaceutical company. We are not selling you anything.
We are researchers, nutritionists, and everyday people who believe that access to trustworthy, understandable health information should not depend on what zip code you live in, what degree you hold, or how much time your doctor has available during a fifteen-minute appointment.
Our Mission
To empower individuals and communities through education, technology, and evidence-based wellness resources that promote informed decisions, transparency, and lifelong healthy living.
Our Vision
A world where everyone has access to trustworthy health information, transparent food systems, and the tools needed to make confident decisions about their well-being.
Why We Exist
Here’s something worth considering:
Much of the wellness knowledge gaining renewed scientific attention today is not new. Humans have used plant-based approaches, mineral-rich foods, whole food nutrition, restorative movement, and mindfulness practices for thousands of years — with a long history of documented benefit.
Modern research is increasingly revisiting these approaches. Study after study is exploring how nutrition, sleep, hydration, stress management, and lifestyle habits influence long-term health outcomes — often with findings that challenge oversimplified conventional advice.
Yet most people never hear about these studies.
The information exists. The challenge is finding it, understanding it, and knowing how to apply it.
That gap is why SmartBar was created.
How We Think About Health
“We don’t treat symptoms. We help you understand the root.”
At the heart of everything SmartBar teaches is a simple framework that cuts through the noise:
Many chronic health conditions are influenced by underlying factors that can often be viewed through two broad lenses: deficiencies and toxicities.
Deficiencies — when the body is missing something it needs to function properly. This includes nutritional deficiencies like magnesium, vitamin D, and trace minerals. It also includes lifestyle deficiencies that rarely make it onto a lab report: inadequate sleep, insufficient movement, poor hydration, chronic stress without recovery, and lack of meaningful social connection. The body keeps score of all of it.
Toxicities — when the body is carrying a cumulative burden of something it struggles to process. This includes food additives, heavily processed ingredients, refined sugars, heavily processed sodium chloride stripped of naturally occurring minerals, environmental chemicals, alcohol, tobacco, and the physiological effects of chronic unmanaged stress. Toxicities don’t always announce themselves immediately. They accumulate quietly, over years, until the body can no longer compensate.
Most people are managing some combination of both — often without knowing it.
This is the lens through which SmartBar approaches health education. Not to diagnose or prescribe, but to help you ask better questions about what your body may be missing and what it may be better off without.
What the Research Is Telling Us
We follow the science wherever it leads. Here is some of what it is saying:
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” — Hippocrates
On salt: Research increasingly distinguishes between heavily processed sodium chloride — stripped of naturally occurring minerals — and minimally processed mineral salts that retain trace elements the body recognizes and uses. The conversation around sodium is more nuanced than “eat less salt” — and that nuance matters.
On cholesterol: Cholesterol plays essential roles throughout the body — in brain function, cellular health, hormone production, and more. Emerging research continues to explore the relationship between cholesterol, dietary fat, carbohydrate metabolism, and long-term health outcomes. These are active areas of scientific inquiry that we believe deserve open, informed discussion.
On blood pressure: Studies continue to examine how magnesium levels, dietary nitrates found in whole foods like beets, sleep quality, and chronic stress influence cardiovascular health. Natural, lifestyle-based interventions are increasingly supported by peer-reviewed evidence and deserve to be part of the conversation.
On chronic conditions: A growing body of research suggests that many chronic health conditions share common contributing factors — nutritional deficiencies, lifestyle imbalances, and cumulative exposure to substances the body may struggle to process. We explore these connections through an educational lens, grounded in published science.
Healthcare systems play a critical role in diagnosing and treating disease. SmartBar focuses on helping people better understand the nutritional, lifestyle, and environmental factors that research associates with long-term health outcomes and prevention.
Our Approach
SmartBar gives you two things:
Transparency
Scan any packaged food and instantly see what’s in it, how it’s processed, and how its ingredients and nutritional profile compare against research-informed benchmarks. No guessing. No marketing spin. Just clearer information about what you’re eating.
Education
Every article, guide, and resource we publish is designed to translate complex scientific findings into plain, accessible language. We reference reputable published research, present multiple perspectives where science is still evolving, and encourage you to think critically and consult qualified professionals for personal health decisions.
We didn’t invent these ideas. We’re helping resurface them — one blog article at a time.
What We Believe
- We believe your body is remarkably capable — when given what it needs and protected from what harms it.
- We believe food transparency is a right, not a privilege.
- We believe that ancient wellness practices and modern scientific research are not opposites — they are increasingly finding common ground, and that intersection is worth exploring honestly.
- We believe prevention deserves as much attention as treatment.
- We believe every person is capable of making better decisions for their health when given clear, honest, research-informed information.
That belief is what SmartBar is built on.
A Note From Our Founder

Constantin Poe
Founder & President
My father had a triple bypass in his sixties.
In the years that followed, he faced a growing list of chronic conditions and relied on a daily collection of medications to manage them. The prescriptions kept coming. The conditions kept multiplying. He did what most of us do — he trusted the process, followed the advice, and hoped for the best.
What struck me, looking back, was how little the conversation ever touched on prevention — on nutrition, on lifestyle, on the factors that research increasingly links to chronic disease long before it becomes impossible to ignore.
He passed away a few years later — not for lack of care, but perhaps for lack of the kind of information that might have changed the conversation much earlier.
I am my father’s son. Same build, same blood, same tendencies. So when my own blood pressure started climbing, I didn’t wait. I ran straight to my doctor — the only place I knew to go.
I walked out with a prescription.
Something didn’t sit right. So I started asking questions. I went looking for what my father was never told — about nutritional deficiencies, about cumulative toxicities, about what peer-reviewed research was actually saying versus what was filtering through to standard clinical advice.
What I found was both eye-opening and motivating. The information existed. It just wasn’t reaching people like my father. Like me. Like most of us.
Part concern for my own health, part curiosity, part a promise to myself — if I ever made sense of this, I wasn’t going to keep it to myself.
That promise became The SmartBar Foundation.
If you have ever watched someone you love navigate a system that felt more reactive than preventive — you already understand why this matters. This platform is built for that person. The one who deserved better information earlier.
We are here to help make sure more people get it in time.

Our Promise
We will never sell your personal data. We will never allow commercial or pharmaceutical sponsorship to influence our content. We will never prioritize engagement over accuracy.
We will always cite our sources and encourage you to read them for yourself.
We will always present emerging science honestly — including where evidence is still developing and where qualified professionals should be consulted.
We will always write for the person who never went to medical school — because that is most of us, and we all deserve to understand the research that affects our lives.
We will keep building — one product scan, one nutrient tracked, one blog article, one informed decision at a time.

The SmartBar Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Everything we build — the app, the education library, the food transparency tools — exists because people believe that access to honest health information changes lives.
Together, we can create a future where healthier choices begin with better information.
If you believe that too, we would love to have you with us on that journey.
