Why ambassadors matter

A movement only spreads through people.

SmartBar doesn’t run on advertising. We can’t outspend the food industry — and we don’t want to. What changes the conversation about food is people, talking honestly to other people. Ambassadors are how the mission travels.

You don’t need a huge following, professional credentials, or expertise in nutrition. You just need to care, to be willing to share what you learn, and to bring the same honesty to your community that we bring to our scoring.

Talk about SmartBar — articles, the app, the methodology — when it’s useful and honest to do so. With friends, family, on social, in conversations. We don’t dictate format or frequency. Be yourself.

Be honest, not promotional

We’re not a marketing program. Don’t oversell, don’t fake enthusiasm, don’t make claims we wouldn’t. The credibility of SmartBar is the only thing we have — and you’re a custodian of it.

Participate when you can

Engage with the Ambassador community where it makes sense for you — share feedback, ask questions, attend the occasional event. Life is busy. We respect that.

How to join

It’s a short process.

Apply

A short application — about your background, why SmartBar matters to you, and how you’d like to be involved. No essay required. About 10 minutes.

Annual donation

The Ambassador tier includes an annual donation of $49 or more — supporting SmartBar’s non-profit research and keeping the platform independent. This is part of what makes the role meaningful.

Review

The SmartBar team reviews your application — usually within 7 days. We’re looking for genuine alignment, not credentials. Most applicants are accepted.

Welcome

Get your badge, your toolkit, and access to the Ambassador community. From there, you’re in — and you can shape the role from there.

Ambassador FAQs.

Do I need to have a big following or be in the wellness industry?

No. We have Ambassadors with massive social followings and Ambassadors with private accounts. We have nutritionists, teachers, parents, students, retirees, and people who just care. The role isn’t about reach — it’s about authenticity.

Is this a paid role?

No. SmartBar is a non-profit, and Ambassadors contribute through their annual donation. The benefits are real — access, community, recognition, eligibility for Coach — but this isn’t an income opportunity. If someone offers you payment to be a brand ambassador, this is a different kind of role.

What’s the difference between Member, Ambassador, and Coach?

Member is for anyone who wants full access to SmartBar. Ambassador is for those who want to actively support and represent the mission. Coach is the credentialed tier — for nutritionists, dietitians, and certified health professionals who want to be listed in our public directory and provide professional services to the community.

What happens after the first year?

The Ambassador tier renews annually. As long as the role is still meaningful to you, you can renew at the same level or apply to step up to Coach if you’ve gained the credentials. There’s no lock-in — if you change your mind, you can return to Member at any time.

Can my Ambassador status be revoked?

Yes — though it’s rare. Ambassador status can be paused or removed if someone misrepresents SmartBar, uses the badge for purposes that don’t fit the mission, or engages in behaviour that damages the credibility of the platform. The handful of times we’ve done this, it’s been clear-cut.
