Blueberries

Whole fruit, used fresh, frozen, or freeze-dried. Contributes natural sugars along with fibre and the polyphenols that give the skin its colour. On an ingredient list it means the fruit itself, not a flavouring derived from it.

Blueberries reach a product in three forms and they are not interchangeable. Fresh and frozen are nutritionally near-identical — freezing happens soon after picking and preserves most of the polyphenols. Freeze-dried concentrates the sugars by weight because the water is gone, which matters when they appear in a bar.

The thing to watch on a label is what "blueberry" is actually doing. Whole fruit is listed as blueberries. "Blueberry flavoured" pieces are usually apple or grape concentrate, sugar, and colouring shaped to look the part — no blueberry required. If the ingredient list says blueberries, you have fruit; if it says blueberry flavour, you do not.

Why it’s classified this way

Classified Safe as whole fruit with its fibre intact.
